Super Dish500 HDTV

Super Dish is a brand new service which Dish network plans to launch later on this year, there is a slight possibility we could see this product introduced by the end of the summer. If you remember last years Team Summit there was allot of talk about the merger and the ability to have a single Dish to pick up programming from 101,110, and 119. Super Dish is basically the same idea, except we are now using a slightly larger Dish and are receiving programming from 105, 110, and 119. If your not familiar with the 105 orbital slot, its a standard medium power KU satellite which is similar to what Prime star used to use for their service before they where bought by DirecTV. From the information Charlie Ergen gave us at Team Summit, Echo star is leasing this satellite for a very long time.

Allot of people here might not like the concept of having a larger Dish, but this is technology we can use today. Unlike the DirecTV merger, it would have been 2-3 years before anyone could have seen the benefits of the additional bandwidth. This is primarily due to the fact that everyone needed to have their dishes upgraded to see all 3 satellite slots before they could stop duplicating all the programming.

There wasn't very many details about this new service available to retailers, however here are some highlights.

A. Medium Power KU FSS Satellite at 105 Degrees West Longitude licensed for all 32 Transponders.
B. Capacity for up to 40/50 HDTV Channels
C. 100 International Channels on a single Dish Solution
D. Ability for Dish network to have 150 local to local Markets serving approximately 90% of the country
E. Possibility for use with Broadband internet service in the future

DISH PVR 921 Duel Tuner HDTV Satellite Receiver

We didn't really hear that much on the 921 as we did at last years Team Summit, but it looks like they are ready to start production which should be available by Christmas 2003. A few people I talked to at Dish said this product might be available by the end of the summer, but you every time they say they are going to release a new product, especially one with lots of potentially buggy software it takes a few extra months to beta test the systems.

Anyways, there are a few things that I was really glad to hear that this product would include......

A. Integrated 8VSB and 8PSK Tuner Cards, which means no more upgrading like we did on the Model 6,000
B. Fire wire outputs
C. DVI Video Outputs
D. Modulated output for channel 3 (even thought I never used it, I missed this feature on the Model 6,000)
E. 200 Gigabyte Hard Drive for 180 hours on SD and 25 hours on HD

A. Dish pro Technology
B. Open TV Software
C. More Memory, Faster EPG
D. Integrated 8VSB and 8PSK Tuner Cards
E. Fire wire, DVI and component outputs. (Please note that the VGA output is no longer supported)
F. Silver Chassis
G. Lower Cost than Model 6,000

Dish 211 Satellite Receiver

Perfect Companion product for Mitsubishi IEEE 1394 HDTV's to view High Definition and Standard Definition Dish network programming. This particular receiver looks just like a standard 301 receiver, except it has (2) 1394 outputs to support a Mitsubishi television. There are no other outputs on this receiver such as RCA or Component video. Low cost HDTV solution, I have no idea on a release date.

Dish 111 Satellite Receiver

This is a really nice low-cost receiver, designed to provide a low-cost solution to add an additional receiver. In addition this will be one of the first receivers with an integrated Smart card. This means that there is no physical smart card with this unit, its actually integrated as part of the circuit board. There still is a slot for a regular smart card, incase Dish wanted to upgrade the security on the receiver.

It comes with a Universal remote control and has Open TV software like we see on the 301's

Dish 311 Satellite Receiver

This is basically your standard 301 receiver. Its got more memory to speed up the guide and eliminate the "Retrieving program information" message when you go the EPG. In addition, its got an integrated Smart Card. This means that there is no physical smart card with this unit, its actually integrated as part of the circuit board. There still is a slot for a regular smart card, incase Dish wanted to upgrade the security on the receiver.

Dish 322 Satellite Receiver

This is basically (2) Standard Dish 311 Satellite Receivers which is just like the 301 except it has (2) tuners. Here are some highlights of this product....

A. Agile Modulated output (Channel 21-69) for the secondary Room in MTS Stereo.
B. IR Remote for Main Television and UHF Remote Control for secondary TV's
C. $4.99 Additional Outlet Fee may be eliminated (Subject to Echo star Management Approval)

Dish 351 QAM Satellite Receiver

This receiver is your basic 301 receiver, but is intended for MDU purposes using a QAM Technology. In a nutshell in a QAM system you setup your own head end and you run and split the cable just like you would with regular Cable TV. Its ideal for MDU situations where the building is already wired with Rg59 or Cable.

This receiver is a replacement for the QAM Model 3800

Dish 522 Satellite Receiver

This is basically (2) Standard Dish 508 Satellite Receivers except it has (2) tuners.

D. Use of PVR in both Rooms, which both users share a single hard drive
E. 120 Gig Hard Drive for 90 hours of recording

Dish 721 Satellite Receiver

This is basically the same receiver we are all familiar with today, just thought I would snap a few additional pictures at the show. One thing I did learn was that there is a software upgrade scheduled for this receiver to support Dish pro Plus Technology to give it the ability to run both tuners off of a single cable instead of 2.

New Products and Ideas

These are some really neat products which I just had to take a picture of. Its about time someone came up with a wiring enclosure for the Sw64 and the window mount is kind of cool, however you won't see me using it at my house anytime soon.

Switches and Accessories

When you thought there was no room for improvement in switching technology, Dish surprised everyone with new Dish pro "Plus Technology" Basically what this technology allows you to do is operate a (2) tuner satellite receiver with a single cable which is perfect for pre-wired homes with 1 cable going to each wall plate.

The best way to explain this technology is that it works like the signal on the Dish pro LNBF's where they stack the even and odd transponders on the same cable. Now imagine stacking the signal for both tuners on a single piece of cable, and then doing the switching at the LNBF to determine which satellite the tuner is looking at.

Other than that, the Dp 44's are really nice and its about time they came up with a nice heavy duty power inserter with no loose plugs.
